Abstract

Introduction: Daylighting in educational spaces extends beyond a functional role and is recognized as a fundamental component linking architecture with health. Despite the expansion of research, the existing literature still faces conceptual and methodological fragmentation. This article, through a systematic review of studies published between 2019 and 2025, seeks to provide an integrated picture of the scientific landscape of this field while revealing hidden gaps and overlooked research directions.

Methods: The research method was designed based on a comprehensive search of databases and systematic screening. In the analysis stage, the selected works were categorized according to dimensions including geographical and climatic patterns, type of educational space, research approaches, evaluation tools, thematic orientations, daylighting assessment metrics, and design strategies. The main objective was to focus on underlying patterns and shortcomings that hinder the formation of a comprehensive framework for sustainable and human-centered design in educational environments.

Results and Discussion: Findings indicated that the existing literature faces several structural gaps: first, the uneven geographical and climatic distribution of studies and the lack of data from cold and unique climates; second, the dominance of visual indicators compared with limited attention to biological criteria; third, the excessive reliance on simulations and the lack of field studies and neuro-monitoring methods; and fourth, the focus on daylighting interventions in contrast to the limited application of dynamic and smart technologies.

Conclusion: The study emphasizes the need to move toward interdisciplinary frameworks that integrate climatic data, advanced simulations, field measurements, and biological indicators to support sustainable, equitable design and promote cognitive health in educational spaces.
