Abstract

Objective:

In light of global housing crises and challenges related to environmental sustainability, the development of "sustainable social housing" has emerged as a key paradigm in contemporary scientific discourse. This study aims to evaluate the components of sustainable social housing and their impact on resident satisfaction.

Methodology:

Considering the research objective, methodological considerations in the field of sustainable social housing were systematically examined using a meta-method approach. In this study, 1,554 relevant articles were retrieved from the Web of Science database, and after removing irrelevant papers, 27 articles were reviewed and analyzed. The coding outputs were directly extracted from MAXQDA software and then interpreted to identify the components of sustainable social housing and their influence on resident satisfaction. Furthermore, to map the scientific landscape and screen keywords, VOSviewer software was employed for co-occurrence network analysis and thematic clustering.



Results and Discussion:

Components such as quality of life, social interactions, environmental and economic sustainability are determining factors in the design and evaluation of sustainable social housing. These components not only identify dimensions related to social housing but also reflect residents' feelings and perspectives, directly affecting their satisfaction. Resident satisfaction in the reviewed studies showed the highest correlation with "housing quality" (including design, amenities, and maintenance), "access to urban services and infrastructure", and "social interactions and sense of belonging". Moreover, a positive and significant relationship was reported between "environmental sustainability" (e.g., energy efficiency and use of sustainable materials) and the level of resident satisfaction.

Conclusion:

The analysis of selected articles revealed that resident satisfaction is a core outcome in assessing the success of sustainable social housing, and it is most strongly linked to housing quality, access to urban services and infrastructure, social interactions, sense of belonging, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the convergence of frequent concepts in the word cloud and the classification of variables into seven main groups indicate that the more coherent the relationship between physical housing quality, social cohesion, environmental efficiency, and quality of life, the higher the level of resident satisfaction. In the content classification of studies, the "domain of resident satisfaction and housing quality sustainability" was identified as one of the four main axes, highlighting the independent and significant position of this component in the literature on sustainable social housing. Accordingly, the findings confirm that resident satisfaction is not merely an individual outcome but a composite indicator for simultaneously measuring quality of life, effectiveness of housing policies, design quality, and the extent of social and environmental sustainability in social housing projects.
