Abstract
Optimal ventilation, provision of clean air, and appropriate distribution, as well as effective removal of accumulated polluted air in enclosed public spaces such as markets and commercial places, are always of great importance as centers of economic and social activities. This research aims to examine the status of indoor airflow influenced by natural ventilation in the Grand Takyeh of Tajrish, a significant historical structure in the market with commercial use, and to provide solutions for the reallocation of businesses based on the current conditions. This study is applied and interdisciplinary, employing a mixed-methods approach. In the first phase, observational methods were used to record observations and describe the issue. The speed and direction of airflow in the studied space were measured using a digital anemometer. Subsequently, data collection and analysis were conducted using simulation strategies. The simulation in this research was performed using CFD methods with the help of Gambit and Fluent software; the validity and reliability of the simulations were confirmed by matching them with empirical evidence. The findings indicated that indoor airflow at all levels, especially at the observer level, was very weak, and due to the positive relative pressure in the interior space of the Takyeh, none of the air entry and exit openings, except for the two western and southern entrances, were effective in the internal ventilation process. Furthermore, the airflow passing through these two entrances was exposed to units producing airborne pollutants, which did not introduce pleasant air into the Takyeh courtyard. This pollution, influenced by the minimal convective airflow inside, circulated in a rotational manner, establishing low-quality and undesirable air throughout the Takyeh. Consequently, considering the state of air circulation in the Takyeh space, it is suggested that while relocating and organizing commercial uses based on the level of airborne pollutant production, efforts should be made to improve indoor airflow patterns and eliminate businesses that cause disturbances to prevent pollutant dispersion.
