Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, smart transportation, as one of the new approaches in urban management and planning, has received widespread attention from researchers and policymakers, and the expansion of digital technologies and the need to improve the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of transportation systems have led to a growing number of studies in this field. For this purpose, this study aims to analyze the scientific literature in the field of intelligent transportation from 2015 to 2024 through a systematic review to explain research patterns, theoretical-methodological strengths and weaknesses, and research gaps.
Research Method: A search for resources was conducted in reputable international databases, and 50 articles were selected for analysis after using the PRISMA model. The data from the selected articles were reviewed and classified after being studied and coded in the content analysis process.
Results and Discussion: Based on the results, most of the studies are in the specialized field of transportation engineering, and other research is related to computer science/machine learning, urban planning, and the field of environmental sustainability. This indicates a dominant technical orientation in the theoretical literature of research. Also, based on the findings, in terms of methodology, quantitative techniques including statistical modeling, optimization algorithms, and computer simulation have been used more in research, and qualitative analyses and theory-based research have been relatively few. In terms of content, the most emphasized technical topics include the development of algorithms for traffic management, while topics related to governance, transportation policy, and sustainability indicators have received less attention in the period under review.
Conclusion: In many studies reviewed in the last decade, a clear and coherent relationship between technical results and institutional or policy consequences has not been considered. In other words, the available evidence indicates a lack of attention to the importance of institutional analysis and a policy-oriented approach in the production of technical knowledge. Despite the instrumental and technological development of smart transportation research, an efficient mechanism for converting quantitative achievements and simulated outputs into institutional decision-making components, executive rules, and operational policy frameworks has not yet been formed; such that many scientific achievements remain without the necessary legal, financial, and participatory platforms to occur in the real world of cities.
