Abstract
This research is a study on visual elements on Saint Stephanus church. All these ornament could be considered as pictorial signs which make up a complete narrative together. In structural semiotics methodology and other semiotic methods of reading, everything in the world could be considered as a text, specially artifacts and art pieces. In conclusion their signs could be read and decoded such as verbal texts. In this quantitative semiotic research, the main goal is finding the hidden meaning of visual system in pictorial elements of the church. As an Introduction, the basic concepts including sign, structure, coding sign system, has been described, then visual signs of the cathedral has been analyzed as a linguistic system. The summary of the results concluded as follows: The visual narrative elements of St. Stephen's Church can be divided into human, plant, animal, abstract motifs, geometric ornaments, and imaginative motifs of composite beings, as well as the light and its effects. The meaning of each of these visual signs can be interpreted in terms of Christian beliefs and by considering historical and cultural context of place and time in explicit and implicit layers or denotations and connotations.
