Abstract
Purpose: The present research tries to investigate the relationship between the non-physical characteristics of the open space of residential complexes and the mental health of the elderly in Isfahan city.
Research method: This research is an applied one. Its research method is derived from quantitative strategies in the form of correlation. The non-physical components of open space were extracted from previous studies using documentary methods and content analysis. The data was collected by observation and an author- made questionnaire. Factor analysis and one sample t- test were used to investigate the relationship between the non- physical characteristics of residential complexes open space and the mental health of the elderly.
Findings: The findings of research show that there is a positive and meaningful relationship between the non- physical components of social interactions, comfort and security, and activities with the mental health of the elderly in three selected residential complexes.
Conclusion: According to the findings of the research, it seems that there is a relationship between the types of open space design patterns of the residential complexes with the possibility of communicating among the residents and increasing their intimacy degree. Mixed and environmental patterns have a positive effect and the strip pattern has a negative effect on this issue. Locating the open space at the entrance of the building or behind it also affects this issue. This issue also applies to the possibility of using the area in different seasons of the year. Also, the extent of social interactions and intimacy among individuals is effective on the feeling of environmental comfort and their satisfaction with the open space of the residential complex.
